Rapid population growth is not foreign, especially in the City of Melbourne. It is expected that Melbourne's population alone will be over 5.9 million by 2030, as it is Australia's fastest-growing capital city. Future projections point to a larger population thus, asks the question; how can the city of Melbourne and the state of Victoria facilitate the prosperity of a new society through the built environment? The studio prompts the solution of further developing surrounding cities to create a more abundant, rich, and diverse urban fabric within Victoria.
One neighbouring city is Sunshine, "The heart of the West" and a melting pot for all cultures. With government plans to connect the new Melbourne Airport Rail to Sunshine Station, the city will become an international destination.
The studio challenged students to redesign Sunshine's Urban fabric and railway corridor. Our Team focused on intensifying the railway corridor with infrastructure creating a robust and concentrated civic space. As a result, the split between Sunshine had been restored and connected. An Urban Design Framework for the project was created and named "The Spine of Sunshine". From this, individual buildings of civic use were designed to fit in the design framework.
