The project terrarium seeks to improve the spatial quality and unify the space of the AD Building at Swinburne University, Hawthorn. Inspired by the Klein bottle, it mimics a non-orientable topology that is organic in shape. The form enables the floor levels to interconnect and morph to the site. Natural light is a significant feature to connecting the two floors, the roof to ground level structure best interprets spatial connectedness within its levels as well as through exterior and interior spaces. The indoor garden is a catalyst in improving ventilation, air quality and user interface. As the design brings the outside, in and allows for the user of the space to enjoy an intimate garden from both floor levels.
While the design is very conceptual, the studio challenged students to think about tectonics and what construction suited best. As a result, Shapeshell panels attached to a steel frame system was appropriate to the nature of the project.
